A mysterious and powerful threat believed to be extinct could return in the next adventure
We are in one of those periods that occur every 5 years in which Nintendo gives a little love to Metroid , this time thanks to the upcoming release of Samus’ new adventure, Metroid Dread . The company is recalling the entire history of the franchise for veteran players and introducing it to new players. The interesting thing is that in one of the messages he has just confirmed that in the new game the Metroids will be extinct.
Through a series of tweets and the development reports of Metroid Dread , Nintendo has shared a lot of information about the Metroid universe and the most recent one is related to the characters that give the series its name.
What caught the eye is that Nintendo confirms that these creatures no longer exist at the time the events of Metroid Dread take place . This is something that is extremely important, since they have existed in practically every game in the series.
WHAT ARE THE METROIDS AND WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM?
This question may be a somewhat strange question for fans of the series, but it is an understandable question for new players who will know the franchise with Metroid Dread . Metroids are floating, jellyfish-like organisms that have the ability to absorb energy from other organisms. They were created by the Chozo race (who raised Samus) to end the threat of the X parasite, which was able to take control of its host and replicate it based on its genetic information.
His name means “last warrior” according to the language of the Chozo. That said, the name does not refer to the protagonist, a similar case in The Legend of Zelda , which many players outside the franchise mistakenly believe that Link’s name is Zelda, from the title.
Before continuing, we must inform you that we will talk about topics related to the history closest to Metroid Dread ; i.e Metroid Fusion , so there could be slight spoilers.
In Metroid Fusion, thanks to the properties of the Metroids, it was possible to save Samus from the X parasite, which could evolve after Samus eradicated supposedly all the Metroids species on his native planet SR388. We say supposedly, because actually in the game it is discovered that they still exist in the universe and are in captivity.
WHY IS METROID DREAD CALLED METROID IF THERE ARE NO METROIDS?
According to the development team, the story arc of the Metroid 2D series , which tells “the story of the mysterious and tangled destinies of Samus Aran and the enigmatic Metroids,” will conclude with Metroid Dread .
If you are a fan of the series, surely you know that there was a decisive event in Metroid Fusion with which the end of the Metroids was hinted at, so you may think that the extinction of the Metroids was already known, as well as that the X parasite was also known. it was eradicated in the same event. However, none of this had ever been confirmed, but it was only known that the threat that Samus would face on the planet ZDR, are the EMMI robots.
In fact, unlike the Metroids, the X parasite could exist in Metroid Dread , according to Nintendo, is it that this powerful enemy that once almost killed Samus is alive? Why did the Metroids cease to exist and Parasite X did not if they were both at the same event?
Something similar happened with the Metroids in Metroid Fusion , who were considered an extinct species, but in the end there were specimens living. Will the same happen in Metroid Dread ? We’ll have to wait to find out, but for now Nintendo says they ceased to exist and that “it will be fun to speculate on the role they will play in this adventure.”
What’s your opinion about it? Do you think the Metroids are extinct? Tell us in the comments.
Metroid Dread will debut on October 8 exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
