Vogt-Roberts is obsessed with bringing cinema and gaming closer together
Metal Gear Solid is one of the most iconic franchises in gaming, and if there’s anyone who wants it to have a movie, it’s Jordan Vogt-Roberts. The director of Kong: Skull Island is still interested in bringing it to the big screen and shows that he knows the franchise.
Vogt-Roberts recently spoke to EW.com about his ideas for the Metal Gear Solid movie. The first thing he made clear is that it is a franchise with very political characters and elements.
“You are dealing with these characters who are ideologies that walk and talk. They represent different ideas from the basic question: ‘How do we make the world whole again?’ They are trapped in this circle of pain, ”said the director.
On the other hand, he pointed out that Metal Gear Solid was a very important game, since it knew how to treat themes and moments in a different way than most video games did at that time.
“Up to that point, killing a boss [in video games] was always seen as a victory. It was the moment of ‘Of course I do! I passed!. Instead, you find yourself in this gloomy and regretful moment, ”he explained.
The filmmaker made it clear that his intention is “to create a new type of action on screen that is based on the silence of stealth, knowing each step you take and as you approach the stomach of the beast, further from safety.”
Finally, he pointed out that he is obsessed with finding ways to connect the language of cinema and that of video games. Of course, he also recognizes that both are very difficult.
“They are not direct translations. I think you really need to understand what it takes from you when you play, why it makes you feel in certain ways, what tone it evokes, “he concluded.
It is important to remember that the production phase of the Metal Gear Solid movie has not yet been greenlit. Jordan-Vogt Roberts is working to convince executives to make it happen. In fact, he has already chosen Oscar Isaac as the one responsible for bringing Snake to life on the big screen . In addition, the script is the responsibility of Derek Connolly, while Avi Arad is the producer. Finally, Peter Kang serves as executive producer.
