Guerrilla Games gave an interview to several editorial offices, thanks to which we can learn new information about Horizon Forbidden West, and at the same time we summarize the details of the upcoming adventure. The title is headed for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, but the developers will take care to use the power of the new generation – one of the graphics modes will provide 60 frames per second on PS5.
Horizon Forbidden West takes place six months after Horizon Zero Dawn and the stories are strongly connected. Aloy will now face a new threat dubbed the “Red Plague” that is spreading across the land dubbed the “Forbidden West”.
We will mostly run around new terrain, but it is very possible that the beginning of the events will bring us back to Colorado, “narrative director Ben McCaw told Gamesradar that ” a huge, huge part of the game takes place in the Forbidden West . “

Aloy will not be alone in the fight, because the authors will clearly show that the protagonist has changed – from the outcast to the leader. The creators “significantly expanded the role of companions” , and during the story we will come across well-known characters, but also completely new tribes.
The authors also made sure that each player starts “in the same place” , so whether you know the ending of Horizon Zero Dawn or what choices you made in the game – Horizon Forbidden West will provide the same experience.
“A whole bunch of new tools for fighting robots” will appear in the position , and many of the devices will allow us to smoothly move around the world. The authors want to be sure that the prepared equipment will be properly used by players. Guerrilla Games has also refined the combat system and will offer players a number of new mechanics – the heroine will now move more smoothly.
In Horizon Forbidden West we will find new types of ammunition (for example sticky grenades), but the authors have also prepared “workbenches”, which we can find in the settlements, and use them to improve weapons and outfits. Guerrilla Games wanted to tweak the basic RPG mechanics in this way.
“It comes from wanting to make weapons more addictive, to have a little more bond with them. By investing and upgrading your time and resources, you have the feeling that you took the time to upgrade this weapon, and you didn’t get the upgrade from the vending machine and just put it on. You have to fight machines or acquire other resources around the world to be able to improve them. “
The game also features a completely redesigned skill tree to add more depth to the game. An important novelty is also a system called “Valor Surge” – it is a specific (cinematic) release of the action that we saw in the demo. Players in this case will load the bar and then be able to use new moves – these special mechanics will appear for each playstyle.
Horizon Forbidden West will also offer a very extensive climbing system, because the one from the previous edition was “limited and limited” . Now, however, we will be able to move with a hook and a glider, which will help a lot in exploration. Aloy can also use the new “focus ping”, which will allow you to quickly (on the fly) see what is next to the heroine. Interestingly, shieldwing was originally designed for the first installment.
The game world is “slightly larger” than the one in the first installment, but more importantly – the authors have now focused on the density of the locations. At the same time, an important place will be the underwater land, which can play a big role in the whole adventure.
The developers also confirmed that a large part of the work on Horizon Forbidden West was done on PlayStation 4 and that most of the tests were carried out on this platform (it is still the main platform for checking positions). On PS4 we will see a different technique of water rendering compared to PS5, and DualSense will provide players with a full experience – the controller will let you feel which weapon you are using. The authors also took care of the 3D sound.
