A week after solving this big mystery about Jesper on the show Shadow and Bone, it’s his sidekick Kaz’s turn to get our attention. And for good reason, we do not know much about the backstory of this ultra mysterious character. The first season of the series aired on Netflix did not allow to deepen the origins of the young man, nor even to explain to us why the latter hid his hands permanently under thick black gloves. However, there is a way to find out more without having to wait for the arrival of possible new episodes. For that, let’s dive into the duology Six of crows, the other literary saga written by Leigh Bardugo and which inspired part of the plot of the series.
In the books, we learn that Kaz is not from Ketterdam. He grew up on a farm far from the city before moving to the capital with Jordie, his older brother, following the tragic death of their father. Unfortunately, barely arrived in the capital, the two naive and inexperienced boys were swindled by the famous Pekka Rollins, pushing them to live on the streets in extreme poverty. As if that weren’t enough, a smallpox epidemic then hit the town, taking Jordie away. Kaz for his part, forcibly taken with his brother’s body to be burned, narrowly escaped the bank using his brother’s bloated corpse as a makeshift raft.. Creepy! This is why, today he forces himself to wear gloves in order to avoid touching the skin of others, this sensation reminding him of the rotten flesh of his deceased brother.
