Some Marvel Studios fans might have a hard time accepting it, but Tony Stark is indeed dead in Avengers Endgame. The leader of the Avengers sacrificed himself in the final battle against Thanos using his own Infinity Gauntlet. A fatal outcome which, when you think about it, was pretty much inevitable from the moment Tony agreed to help the Avengers. This was his real dilemma: risk losing his family even if it means living with the weight of guilt or helping his old friends and saving the universe one last time. By solving the riddle of time travel and accompanying the other heroes, Tony Stark was thus endangering his new life.
Although he has made it very clear that he does not want to give up everything he has been able to build in five years, the fact that he accepts to return to service as Iron Man shows that he was aware of the risks. The snap was therefore perhaps not his real sacrifice, but rather the latter’s conclusion, of the choice he made earlier in the film. It is indeed unlikely that Tony was not aware of the dangers of such a mission, especially since he understands Doctor Strange’s message very quickly. Heavy consequences, his decision however showed that despite what the other heroes may have sometimes thought, he knew how to show heroism and altruism. The future of the Avengers since The disappearances of Iron Man and Steve Rogers worried the members of the group, but also the Eternals, as the trailer showed of the film on these.
