Square Enix’s much-loved MMORPG is getting a key expansion this coming November.
Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is gearing up to close a narrative arc that has spanned eleven years, and will, of course, do so in the Endwalker expansion that launches in November. How could it be otherwise, the story will be one of the strongest points of the downloadable; But although that is taken for granted based on the history of the beloved MMORPG, the truth is that its director has raised expectations even more.
Speaking to PC Gamer, Naoki Yoshida comments that there is roughly 30% more story content and cutscenes than in Shadowbringers. That one, let us remember, has the stamp of a masterpiece: ” a supreme degree of excellence ” said our colleague Alberto Pastor at the time. In fact, Endwalker covers so much that even its developers weren’t sure they could cover so much.
“It was too much, and it could be critical for our calendar” comments the creative, who admits having considered the possibility of cutting some parts of the story. However, adapting the game to those cuts involved so much work that they ended up going with everything anyway. In terms of size, the expansion is similar to what we are used to seeing every two years, but in terms of quality, we are facing something bigger and special.
“The number of dungeons is the same as in Shadowbringers, but the work we’ve put into them has certainly increased,” Yoshida explains. “Environments, mechanics and even combat presentations, we’ve brought a lot to the individual elements that go into this content. I think it will be a much more robust experience overall than in previous iterations. Yoshida is known for weighing his words, so fans probably have every reason to be excited.
nd what will happen next? Unlike past expansions, Endwalker’s story will not be supplemented and extended through updates because the entire arc will be locked in that starter pack. Instead, new versions of the game will open a different arc. Yoshida implies that even after this final battle between the warriors of light and the Ascians there is still room to explore in Hydaelyn; as well as different epochs of Eorzea that we can visit, both in the past and in the future. Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker will be available on November 23 on PC, PS4 and finally also on PS5.
