Where did the offtanks go? In a shattering announcement, Blizzard Entertainment announced the removal of a tank role to bring 5-player teams back to Overwatch 2, but also unveiled maps and other content to come.

Yesterday, Blizzard Entertainment broadcast a live broadcast exclusively revolving aroundOverwatch 2, the direct sequel to Overwatch which was released in 2016. Unlike the first title in the license, the second will focus more on PvE campaigns always putting its story forward, although PvP will not disappear. The characters will all get a makeover, but these changes could extend their gameplay as well.
- Different skills for heroes
In its presentation, Blizzard unveiled some gameplay tweaks: Winston, for example, will get a secondary fire that can stretch out his door, while Mei will lose his total enemy freeze skill. This ability will be exclusively reduced to its ultimate.
In addition to these adjustments, the heroes will all get a unique passive related to their playstyle: for example, supports will gain constant healing, while DPS will have a higher movement speed. As for the tanks, they will logically be more difficult to move (Lucio’s bump will therefore no longer be able to push Reinhardt and his heavy armor back several meters …).
This information is by far the one that elicited the most reactions in the community: Overwatch 2 will be a 5 vs. 5, and the role sacrificed will be that of the tank. Obviously, the meta could decide otherwise from the simple will of the players if there is no role in Overwatch 2, but a priori, the typical composition will therefore be reduced to 2 DPS, 2 supports and a single tank.
If this could create a few arguments between friends about how to reduce 5, it is especially on the competitive scene that this change will have a significant impact. Indeed, players who have specialized for years as an offtank (or main tank) will potentially have half the offer when the competitions pass on Overwatch 2. The Overwatch League teams will also have to get rid of it. one player, and it will be difficult for these tank specialists to specialize in another role in order to hope to get their pin out of the game. Either way, this announcement seems rather final.

In addition to these major announcements, other changes were announced such as a redesigned user interface to give Overwatch 2 a little more unique appearance, the new Push game mode about which little is known and 8 new maps.
In the meantime, we are still in the shadows regarding even an exit window ofOverwatch 2, while the development of Overwatch was somewhat put on hold over a year ago, since the release of the last character Echo. The game could be expected for spring 2022, but nothing is certain.
