Naoki Yoshida recognizes the parallels between FF14 and Miura’s legendary manga.
As you probably know by now, this week he passed away at the age of 54 Kentaro miura, manga author Berserk. It is one of the most influential works of the entire dark fantasy genre, and particularly in video games it is easy to find countless ideas inspired by the adventures of Guts. Dark Souls is the most prominent example, but it is by no means the only one: Final Fantasy games also follow their path.
Shortly after the news spread across the internet, Final Fantasy XIV players began flocking to the city of Ul’Dah to pose as dark knights or playing as bards in honor of the legendary work of Miura, something that of course has spread to social networks. And it has also reached the ears of director Naoki Yoshida.
FF14’s Dark Knight is clearly inspired by Guts, from Berserk Talking With PC Gamer, the creative appreciates the gesture of his players. “It was exciting to see the influence that it has had in the players. I also want to thank the players for taking the time to show it off. The players in Japan are equally affected by this and there is a strong impact among the fans as well. “
In a personal capacity, Yoshida acknowledges how Berserk has “consciously or unconsciously” influenced his work with FF14. Of course, it goes without saying that the dark knights owe a lot to the poses Guts takes on the panels of the manga. “Mr. Miura’s job was definitely wonderful and very artistic in the way that it showed such interesting elements […] It is unfathomable how much it influenced everyone. It is a very unfortunate loss. “
Although Berserk cannot be finalized in the way we would like, if you like to keep track of its influences keep in mind that FF14 has announced the release date of Endwalker, its next expansion. Yoshida works in parallel on this game and FF16, now under the tutelage of a new manager for the Final Fantasy label.
