Genshin Impact is one of the most popular games in recent months and a lot of people enjoy it every day. Now this game has become the protagonist of several headlines because it was harshly criticized for presenting content that they consider racially insensitive.
What happens is that, in the last hours, the hashtag #BoycottGenshin has been gaining popularity on Twitter. If you go to see why so many people are tweeting about it, you may not find a clear answer and you only see individuals complaining about people who complain. That or people asking for changes to the gameplay or more characters.
So what the heck was what happened? While the origin of the hashtag is unclear, one of the reasons it exploded was due to user EM0GOJO’s comment. This subject accused the game of presenting content that is racially insensitive.
As an example, the Twitter user puts the Hilichurls, Genshin Impact’s most common enemy type . These types of enemies are located in a lot of areas of Teyvat and in your adventure you will find variants of different sizes and various attack patterns.
What’s wrong with these curious enemies? The criticism comes in that they are inspired by indigenous cultures. Especially the dances they perform within the game.
“I want to talk about the hashtag #BoycottGeenshin. As an indigenous person, I want to say that the fact that the hilichurls are inspired by indigenous people is not okay. People used to make fun of his dances and people (including me) are hardly realizing this (…) I need non-indigenous Genshin fans to please listen to us. Share this. We are trying to raise our voices, ”he explained.
There are also those who fear that the hashtag has gained so much recognition due to people using it to request more content and not to criticize the ways in which the game represents these cultures.
At the moment, MiHoYo has not commented on this situation. At the time of writing, more than 56,000 tweets have been posted on the subject.
NOT EVERYONE AGREES WITH THE ALLEGATIONS AGAINST GENSHIN IMPACT
As often happens in cases like this, a huge discussion has been generated on social networks. On the one hand, there are those who believe that Genshin Impact could go the extra mile to avoid being considered racially insensitive. On the other are individuals who think they are exaggerating and misinterpreting.
For example, the Twitter user known as manangaleexx mentioned that he sees the Hilichurl dance as something funny, as it reminds him of part of the Philippine culture, of which he is a part. So when he saw it, he thought it was “cool.”
On the other hand, there are also individuals who say that, at the moment, there are more important things to discuss than Genshin Impact .
“GUYS, WE LITERALLY HAVE SOME OF THE WORST COVID OUTBREAKS IN OUR COUNTRY AND ARE YOU CONCERNED WHY THE GAME IS ‘racist’?” Mentioned a user known as LunalyuHoshi.
WILL GENSHIN IMPACT BE CANCELED?
Now, it is important to remember that it is a movement started in social networks. This is why you may be thinking that it could be a coordinated joke to make it trend and get attention. We suspect that, but there are reasons to believe that this is not the case.
The reality is that some of the individuals have well-argued complaints. Thus, it seems that they are really individuals with criticism of part of the content that the game presents and it is valid that they raise their voices to highlight it.
Does this mean that Genshin Impact is canceled and that you should feel bad about playing it? Not necessarily, but it’s interesting to hear about the different perspectives on a product. That said, at the end of the day they are just that and it seems difficult for MiHoYo to make changes to Genshin Impact.
Also, in our internet search we did not find any voice asking to cancel the game. Only people who criticized his way of playing certain topics and that’s it. So while the hashtag attracted a lot of attention, to say that the game is being canceled would be disproportionate.
In fact, the subject who criticized Genshin Impact made it clear that this is not an attempt to cancel the game: “MiHoYo has done more than just this. You can keep playing it, nobody is forcing you to stop. But raising your voice against MiHoYo for things like this should be done ”.
And you, what do you think about this situation? Do you think the criticisms against Genshin Impact are valid? Tell us in the comments.
Genshin Impact is available for PlayStation 4, PC, and mobile devices. We remind you that it will soon be coming to Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5.
