Myths of the Eastern Kingdom debuted this week and the 3D Games team had the opportunity to interview the co-director of the DLC.
The Immortals Fenyx Rising universe continues to grow and this week Ubisoft’s game welcomed Myths of the Eastern Kingdom, its second DLC that is characterized by leaving aside the Greek mythology of the main game to make way for a new adventure that takes us to know a little about Chinese mythology. As part of this launch, Ubisoft offered 3DGames the opportunity to interview Jiang an qi, Associate Director of the study Ubisoft Chengdu, to learn more about the expansion development process.
Exploring myths little known in the West
This content is interesting for Western audiences, as it addresses little-known myths outside of China and who better than a studio located in that country to give the work authenticity. “As a Chinese team, it has long been our ambition to bring Chinese mythology to such a game and give it the attention it deserves. Working on the DLC gave us the fun challenge of establishing a unique, and rarely explored part of Chinese myths, while finding ways to represent them in a way that fans of Immortals Fenyx Rising can appreciate, ”the director noted, adding that they will be delighted that everyone knows myths that many of the developers grew up with.
We spend a lot of time studying and researching Chinese myths.Jiang An Qi, Ubisoft ChengduThe specific inspiration that Jiang An Qi refers to for making this content is a document known as “Classics of Mountains and Seas” -also called Shan hai jing– of which there is an English translation, although the director assures that much of the richness of the work has been lost in translation. “There is very little detailed background available to readers who are not fluent in Chinese. The synopsis of these myths exists in several wikis, web pages and blogs, but most of them only scratch the surface of the most popular interpretations of these myths ”, commented the director about having chosen this document when giving life to the Immortals Fenyx Rising expansion.
The director referred to a specific myth which allowed them to integrate various stories into this content. “We spent a lot of time studying and researching Chinese myths and trying to organize the structure of the timeline and the relationships between the gods. One source of inspiration came from a han dynasty book called Mon Heng that mentions that Nuwa patched up the sky after Gong Gong brought down Bu Zhou Mountain., which helped us link the two events and define a clearer narrative path for the story, “he said.
Complementing the above, the director specified the mythological stage which was selected to locate the content that we will play in the Ubisoft title. “The myth of Nuwa patching up the skies exists in multiple forms and versions, all basically worth a few paragraphs of text. Similar to Greek mythology, the flow of Chinese myths can be divided into two periods: the age of myth, where events and individuals are more idealized and abstract, then the age of heroes, where the stories become more rooted and linked to the historiography of the Chinese. We choose the earlier age of myth in Chinese mythologyas it is mostly unexplored territory and it gave us the freedom to offer our interpretation of the myths ”.
What to expect from the Eastern Kingdom?
The director told us that this new content will lead us to a new island which has a size of approximately a quarter of the Golden Island which was explored in the main campaign. This new space, combined with the missions of the new DLC campaign will offer players between 7 and 12 hours of play. He also noted that the artistic inspiration for creating this kingdom were the Qin dynasty works, something that we will see reflected in both the architecture and the use of negative space in many of the paintings that decorate this new world.
Our goal was to build on the key pillars of the main game.Jiang An Qi, Ubisoft ChengduRegarding the gameplay, the director explained what were the bases that supported this expansion. “As downloadable content, our goal was to build on the key pillars of the main game – combat, exploration and puzzles – while bringing something new to the table in a way that allows us to express iconic or symbolic aspects of Chinese culture. For example, when approaching combat, we adjust the timing and animation of our hero’s attacks To better suit the Wushu style, we reworked divine powers with a Chinese myth framework and introduced the God Seal system to give players already familiar with the main game a new parameter to consider in combat. Our puzzles also took a similar approach, as did the bagua puzzle, in which we reconfigure the puzzles of the constellations, but with a thematic focus on Chinese philosophy on the natural world on astrology ”, he commented.
In the same way, the new 5 mythological creatures that we will find in the Eastern Kingdoms. Here is the description of the co-director of the expansion:
- Fei: It is a poisonous and toxic monster with a thick, bull-like body and a serpentine tail that brings death wherever it goes. Its appearance is a harbinger of impending famine or war. Also, it smells really bad.

A DLC that seeks to awaken interest in Chinese mythology
It’s a good platform for players to find out more about these unique myths.Jiang An Qi, Ubisoft ChengduAlso in the interview there was the opportunity to talk about the decision to make a DLC instead of a full game inspired by this mythology that will work as a sequel. Regarding the latter, the director commented: “From the beginning, our goal was to extend the Immortals Fenyx Rising universe and explore a new mythology, while providing players with a fresh and captivating adventure that brought together all the ingredients they loved in the game. base game. This it’s the first time for us on a new IP, so we wanted to see how much we could challenge ourselves as developers to wow players. DLCs are perfect for this challenge, because you can use the foundation you have already built in the main game and adapt it to create something new and different”.
The director did not want to delve into details about the connection of this content with the main game, but assured that there is many surprises players will find on your adventure.
In Ubisoft Chengdu They are happy to have been able to capture a bit of their roots in one of the great games of the French publisher and hope that it is the starting point to arouse curiosity about the subject among players. “We believe that this new configuration is a good platform for gamers to find out more about these unique myths and hopefully pique their curiosity to learn more. “
