Virtual reality is experiencing a second youth and we must take advantage of its good health and the past, present and future catalog.
It may have taken us a bit by surprise, that it was not the priority or that it even had an uncertain future. But it is already a reality: there will be a new next-generation PlayStation VR model, with significant improvements over the previous model. To get started, higher resolution and field of view, perhaps the weakest point of the first, forced to be competitively priced when VR was taking off.
Taking advantage of PS5 hardware is an open door to many PC gamesThe device will also have a single cable, which is also good news, as we will get rid of the hassle of cables and converters that involved connecting (and later picking up) the PS VR. This means, of course, that it is not a wireless model, like Oculus Quest 2. Although wireless virtual reality is one of the most striking elements, it is understood that Sony is betting, deep down, to take advantage of the power of the new PlayStation 5 instead of building a dedicated chip.
Last but not least, the inclusion of a dedicated remote control for this new model, that it will come to replace that “fix” that were the PS Move; outdated controllers compared to current tracking technologies. The company talks about technology with applications similar to that of the DualSense, the PS5 controller, but most likely it will keep similarities in its forms with the rest of the VR controllers. Not only are they comfortable and a good way to emulate our hand movements in the virtual environment, but they also allow compatibility with a good battery of games already available on the market.
Why is it such good news that it is announced so soon? In order not to miss the new train of VR, on the one hand. Technology is having a second life thanks to the success of Quest 2 and more and more studios are seeing a striking market. Second, the original PS VRs performed well, but they came out in October 2016. Having an announcement and an early release (possibly around 2022) will allow the new goggles’ journey through the generation to be longer.
PS VR 2 (let’s call it that for now) would benefit from the entire catalog already released in the previous model. Improved? I imagine that it will be necessary to apply some updates to the games to increase the resolution and perhaps the refresh rate, but some games would benefit a lot from it. It would be interesting to have an AstroBot looking better than ever and a Resident Evil 7 taking advantage of the extra definition to be even scarier.
Also, take advantage of PS5’s new hardware opens the door to many PC games That didn’t come, partly because the PS4’s hardware was limited. And we are all thinking, of course, of the same game: Half-Life: Alyx. Having what is probably the best VR game on the platform would be the best candy, and Valve has never had a problem sharing franchises like Portal and Half-Life on consoles in the past. So pulling catalog past, present on the PC and future, PS VR 2 would be a good environment that would help to enhance the video game in virtual reality. Of course, with some exclusivity war involved, I have no doubt that Facebook is strong.
Only the question of price remains, and fortunately the panels are getting cheaper.Only the question of price remains. Fortunately, technology has evolved enough and has lowered panel costs. Quest has been the smartest student and has created a helmet with the perfect balance between quality / price. I don’t think Sony is lagging behind, honestly. Although we still do not have official PVP, $ 299 would be the magic figure, the limit in the psychological barrier that the interested user would be willing to pay without it hurting his pocket so much.
Glad to see VR in such good shape. That Sony renews its bet is the best symptom of the state of health in which it is. An alternative way of playing that, to the right player, I never tire of recommending to renew the passion for the video game.
