I am learning about how to make money from buying and selling Pokemon cards. This is my self-study process.
I have already said it in other posts. To earn money in the world of collectibles you have to become an expert on the subject. I’m still far from it but every day I try to find a space to learn something new. This is the process that I am carrying out.
Videos on Youtube
This part should not surprise you if you follow this blog for a while. The content and knowledge is out there. All you have to do is identify the videos on YouTube for it. An English channel that I can recommend is this. It is the one that I liked the most at the content level. The good thing is also that you can follow the evolution of letters that this Youtuber has recommended and the evolution of prices that it has had.
At the beginning I have seen all the videos that I could to understand how the subject is structured. Once I had understood the structure I got into the details.
Buy Ebay cards
The easiest way to learn is by buying cards. It requires comparing prices and following up. In this way you are identifying other cards that you were not looking for and you also learn about them. At first I bought a lot of variety, especially cheap lots. Right now I’m focusing more on individual cards where I see short-term potential. The one I’m betting the most on is a version of Rayquaza where I’ve already bought a dozen or more in German, English, and Japanese. If you are a bit into the world of Pokemon you can surely guess what it is.
Sell cards on marketplaces
The step that I am missing is the part of the sale. To complete the process I have to have a real idea of the demand that I get in the marketplaces where I move. This way I can go even more aggressively for some cards because I know the buy price, the sell price and the margin that I can get. The prices of the cards move daily. It’s amazing how fast this goes. The other day I also bought my first letter graduated with PSA 10. With shipping and customs costs it cost me 100 euros. A week earlier, a PSA 10 of the same letter had been sold for $ 250. I’d say I’ve been lucky.
At the same time I continue to invest in Lego. I made a small purchase of a Minecraft set in Germany yesterday for an incredible price. I caught 120 units from the set. Let’s see how many I get. There is always the risk that some of them will cancel you if you buy in not so usual quantities … On this purchase I will have at least a 100% ROI within 6 months.
Pokemon is another game with new rules. Will I learn to play it? We’ll see…
Stay tuned.
