Several clues in The Lady’s Game on Netflix suggested that Alma, Beth’s mother, was going to die shortly.

The Lady’s Game hit Netflix, but it’s not the most popular series in every country in the world! If she obviously broke audience records, it is in particular thanks to the incredible story of Beth. Followers loved seeing Beth’s evolution (Anya Taylor-Joy), passed from the lost little orphan to the best chess player in the world. Of course, fans enjoyed seeing the young woman bond more and more to her adoptive mother, Alma. Unfortunately, his death came suddenly before the end of the series, without the director really dwelling on the subject. Alma would have died of hepatitis, but if we are interested in the many clues left over the course of the plot, we could already know the fate that was reserved for him.

Indeed, we were able to quickly realize that Alma was suffering from drug addiction and alcoholism. Several times her husband lectured her “that the doctor recommended him to do more sport” or that she drank too much. What alert us to his state of health, the latter also pointing out to him “that she was sick all the time”. Alma probably suffered from the autoimmune version of hepatitis – which is three times more likely in women than in men – which is why his symptoms varied from day to day. Alma was doing very well the day before her death, so she may well have had a ruptured aneurysm overnight. As a bonus, Alma’s death was important to Beth’s development. Without realizing it, the young chess poet was dependent on her mother, and if she had not lived through this sad event, she might not have realized the strength that lay dormant within her. Is this also the reason that Beth bought Alma’s house from her stepfather in The Lady’s Game ?
