2021 is about to start and I already have one of my most anticipated series (docuseries) for next year. I’m talking about ‘The History of Swear Words’, an informative Netflix series in which Nicolas Cage sits in an elegant armchair to tell us about the origin and strength of studs.
The docuseries, if we can call it this way, will be released on January 5 (a gift for Twelfth Night) where experts in etymology, pop culture, historians and entertainment personalities (Sarah Silverman, Nick Offerman, Baron Vaugh or DeRay Davis) analyze the use of various swear words and their impact, as we can see in this trailer.
Thus each episode will have in the center a rudeness: Fuck, Shit, Bitch, Dick, Pussy and Damn. Here I am curious about how they decide to translate the series, because the impact of each swear word changes not only from language to language but also from country to country. It is not the same to say “shit” in Spain as in the United States or in some Latin American countries.
Cultural differences aside (to see if this is successful and they decide to mount local versions), the truth is that things look pretty good. The docuseries comes from the comedy experts of Funny or Die, starring Bellamie Blackstone as showrunner.
