Released on forgotten consoles over 40 years ago, some video games are invaluable to today’s collectors. They are traded at several tens of thousands of euros. This is undoubtedly the collateral effect of streaming and dematerialization of the gaming world.
Gaming: vintage flavor is priceless
Old cartridges from our childhood and other discs to insert into the console are becoming increasingly rare and take on a particular retro flavor when we fall back on them. The seduction is such that it is minted for some, very expensive.
This was the case in 2008 when collector Anthony DeNardo auctioned off his Gamma Attack cartridge, released on the Atari 2600 for almost $ 47,000. An unrivaled score, all the cartridges of the same game having disappeared from circulation. The added value is spectacular when you know that the average price of a video game is estimated at 60 euros.
Where can you find these little nuggets that are traded on the market of the knowledgeable at gold prices ? Probably in flea markets and garage sales or simply by going around your own collection in your old teenage bedroom .
Video games: 14,000 euros per Tetris
The limited edition, packaging and reputation of the video game are assets to resell it more expensive a few years later, even if the video games that shake the market today are not necessarily the most successful. Air Raid for example, released on Atari 2600 is a common shooting game where you have to protect the city from an air attack. Released only 12 copies, with blue packaging and a T-shaped handle, are enough for two cartridges to have recently been sold for 13,901 euros and 32,435 euros.
The famous Tetris, known worldwide, is negotiated between 2,800 and 14,970 euros per cartridge if it is the version released on Senga Genesis. Only 10 copies in the world would exist. An unlicensed copy, signed by the creator of the brick game Alexey Pajitnov, even hit the headlines by selling a million dollars.
Another idea: the games that revolutionized their era like Stadium Events, released on Nes, one of the first video games equipped with a flexible plastic mat on which the player could jump or run. The story goes that Nintendo bought the rights to the game a year after its release and then renamed it World ClassTrack Meet. In order to avoid any confusion, the video game leader had all the Stadium Events in the stores removed and destroyed. 200 copies already sold are still circulating and are sold in packaging at auction at $ 38,000.
Investing in video games
To start building up a future heritage, no secret. You have to invest in future essential licenses and preferably in a limited collector’s edition like the first version of Grand Theft Auto. The title, having regularly made the headlines for its violence, sells for around 90 euros for its PlayStation version, almost double its original value. The Legend of Zelda, collector’s edition, released on Game Cube only 17 years ago, is sold on EBay for 300 euros in a blister.
Do not hesitate to inquire about the international versions of certain video games like Final Fantasy. Editions not necessarily released in France and offering original packaging can have, in the eyes of collectors, invaluable.
